The Kentucky Derby trail may have finished months ago, but many of its biggest names are about to meet again.
The 2026 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, August 29 is building into one of the strongest three-year-old races of the season, with Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo expected to head an excellent field.
For Golden Tempo, this is another chance to confirm that he is the leading three-year-old in America.
For several of his rivals, it is a chance to turn the tables.
The likely field contains winners and leading performers from the Arkansas Derby, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, along with horses who have made their mark during the summer.
It gives the Travers the feel of a reunion for the horses we spent the spring following towards Churchill Downs.
Golden Tempo Remains the Horse to Beat
Golden Tempo has not raced since winning the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 6, but trainer Cherie DeVaux appears happy with his preparation.
The colt worked four furlongs in 47.46 seconds at Saratoga on Saturday, August 15, with regular jockey Jose Ortiz aboard.
DeVaux said afterwards that Golden Tempo appeared fit and happy and was in a good place with two weeks remaining before the Travers.
His preparation has not been completely straightforward.
Golden Tempo suffered a brief illness after the Belmont which interrupted his training and forced connections to abandon an intended run in the Jim Dandy.
Instead, he will go directly from the Belmont to the Travers.
That means a break of almost three months between races, although his recent work suggests DeVaux has been able to get him back where she wants him.
Golden Tempo has already proved himself at the Travers distance of 1¼ miles.
He came from last in the Kentucky Derby to catch Renegade and win by a neck before producing another strong late run to take the Belmont by 1¼ lengths from Commandment.
He has become a difficult horse to beat when the pace and race develop in his favour.
Renegade Gets Another Chance
If there is one horse whose connections might feel they have unfinished business with Golden Tempo, it is Renegade.
The Todd Pletcher-trained colt won the Arkansas Derby before coming desperately close to winning the Kentucky Derby.
Renegade looked to have done enough at Churchill Downs before Golden Tempo arrived late to beat him by a neck.
They met again in the Belmont, where Renegade finished third.
Now comes meeting number three.
Renegade returned from the Belmont to win the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, coming from well off the pace to beat Commandment by half a length.
He was awarded a 98 Beyer Speed Figure and appears to have come out of the race particularly well. Pletcher said his energy and appetite had been good following the Jim Dandy.
The Travers gives him another chance to finally finish in front of Golden Tempo.
Silent Tactic Could Improve Again
Silent Tactic is another horse who brings a direct link back to the Arkansas Derby.
The Mark Casse-trained colt finished second to Renegade at Oaklawn after earlier winning the Southwest Stakes.
He was due to run in the Kentucky Derby but was scratched because of a foot problem, which kept him away from the track for four months.
His return came in the Jim Dandy.
Despite the long absence, Silent Tactic raced much closer to the early pace than usual and kept going to finish third behind Renegade and Commandment.
Casse was encouraged by the performance.
The trainer estimated that Silent Tactic may have been only around 90 per cent ready for the Jim Dandy and believes there should be improvement to come at Saratoga.
That makes him a very interesting Travers runner.
Sea Strike Brings Something Different
Not every possible Travers starter came through the Triple Crown races.
Sea Strike has forced his way into the discussion after an emphatic victory in the Listed Curlin Stakes at Saratoga.
The Chad Brown-trained colt won by 8¼ lengths, taking a major step forward as his connections tested him over a longer distance.
Brown indicated afterwards that the Travers was a possible next target, which would mean a big rise in class against Golden Tempo, Renegade and the rest.
Sea Strike does not have their Kentucky Derby record, but that may be exactly what makes him interesting.
He is a fresh horse arriving from a different route.
Emerging Market Has Already Beaten Golden Tempo
There is also Emerging Market, another Chad Brown-trained colt with a major Derby prep on his record.
Emerging Market won the Louisiana Derby in only his second career start.
Golden Tempo finished third that day.
Things have not gone as smoothly since. Emerging Market finished tenth in the Kentucky Derby and fifth in the Belmont before dropping into allowance company at Saratoga.
However, the Louisiana Derby remains important evidence that he is capable of producing a high-class performance.
He is currently regarded as a definite Travers contender.
A Field Packed With Familiar Names
The possible field goes much deeper.
Baby Vino, winner of the Haskell Stakes, is among those expected to run, while The Puma, winner of the Tampa Bay Derby before narrowly losing the Florida Derby, is also being prepared for Saratoga.
Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo remains under consideration.
So does Commandment, who won the Florida Derby before finishing second to Golden Tempo in the Belmont and then second again behind Renegade in the Jim Dandy.
Ocelli, third in the Kentucky Derby, is another possible runner, while Indiana Derby winner Leading Change has also entered the Travers discussion.
As of August 14, Renegade, Baby Vino, Sea Strike, Silent Tactic, The Puma, Leading Change and Emerging Market were regarded as definite or strongly intended runners alongside Golden Tempo, with Napoleon Solo, Ocelli and Commandment still under consideration.
The final field can still change considerably before declarations.
The Travers Could Tell Us Plenty
That depth is what makes the 2026 Travers so interesting. This is not simply Golden Tempo against a collection of new challengers. These are horses whose form has been linked throughout the year.
- Renegade beat Silent Tactic in the Arkansas Derby.
- Emerging Market beat Golden Tempo in the Louisiana Derby.
- Golden Tempo beat Renegade and Ocelli in the Kentucky Derby.
- Golden Tempo then beat Commandment and Renegade in the Belmont.
- Renegade returned to beat Commandment and Silent Tactic in the Jim Dandy.
Now many of them could meet again over 1¼ miles at Saratoga.
Golden Tempo has won the two races that matter most so far and deserves his position at the head of the three-year-old division.
But the Travers gives the rest one more major chance to test him.
And if most of the expected runners make it to Saratoga on August 29, the Midsummer Derby could give us one of the best races of the American season.
