There is no shortage of quality in the 2026 Travers Stakes, but the race many fans will want to see is simple: Golden Tempo against Renegade, one more time.
Golden Tempo has already beaten Renegade twice this year, first by a neck in the Kentucky Derby and then more comfortably in the Belmont Stakes. Yet the official morning line is keeping them close for Saturday’s Travers at Saratoga.
Golden Tempo is the 5-2 favourite, with Renegade next at 3-1. After Renegade’s win in the Jim Dandy earlier this month, it is easy to see why. So, can Todd Pletcher’s colt finally turn the tables?
A Strong Travers Field at Saratoga
The 157th Travers Stakes will be run at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, August 29th, over 1 1/4 miles on dirt, with a purse of $1.25 million.
Golden Tempo and Renegade head a 10-horse field that also includes Preakness winner Napoleon Solo, Haskell winner Baby Vino and Curlin Stakes winner Sea Strike.
Renegade has drawn post five, while Golden Tempo starts from post nine. Sea Strike, third in the betting at 5-1, is in post seven.
It is much more than a two-horse race, but there is a good reason Golden Tempo and Renegade lead the betting.
Renegade Has Been Knocking on the Door
Renegade has raced eight times, winning three, finishing second three times, and third twice. He has never finished outside the first three.
After winning the Sam F. Davis Stakes, he took the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby before heading to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby.
Renegade hit the front in the stretch and looked to have a serious chance of taking the Derby, only for Golden Tempo to catch him close home. The official margin was just a neck.
That defeat still gives Renegade backers reason for confidence, as he has already shown he can produce a top-class performance over the same 1 1/4-mile distance he faces in the Travers.
Golden Tempo Won Their Saratoga Rematch
The pair met again in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga in June, also run over 1 1/4 miles this year. Golden Tempo was stronger that day, coming from last to win by 1 1/4 lengths from Commandment. Renegade finished third, 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner.
That is probably the strongest argument against Renegade in that Golden Tempo has already beaten him over this course and distance.
However, Renegade has raced since then, and his Jim Dandy performance put him right back among the leading Travers contenders.
The Jim Dandy Changed Things
Todd Pletcher sent Renegade to the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga on August 1st, the main local prep for the Travers.
He settled at the back and was around 11 lengths off the early pace before starting his run, steadily closing the gap and getting the better of Commandment late on to win by half a length.
The performance was encouraging. He showed patience and a strong finish, and did it on the Saratoga dirt he will race on again.
He also arrives on Saturday with a recent competitive run behind him. In contrast, Golden Tempo has not raced since the Belmont on June 6th.
A New Jockey for Renegade
There is one important change. Regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. is recovering from a foot injury, so Tyler Gaffalione takes over.
That matters because Renegade is a closer, so Gaffalione will need to get the timing just right. From post five, he should have a few options early on and, ideally, can get Renegade settled without allowing Golden Tempo to get too far away.
That could be the key to the whole race. We already know Renegade has plenty of late speed, but he cannot afford to give Golden Tempo too much of a head start turning for home.
If the pair are still within a few lengths of each other as they swing into the Saratoga stretch, then things could get very interesting.
Renegade was only a neck behind Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby, so we already know he can make the favourite work hard. Another close finish between the pair would hardly be a surprise.
Golden Tempo Is Still the One to Beat
No matter what way you frame the 2026 Travers Stakes, and no matter which horse you look at, Golden Tempo deserves his place at the head of the market.
Cherie DeVaux’s colt has won four of six starts, including the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and is two-for-two over 1 1/4 miles.
The one question is his break between races, and the fact that it was a result of illness.
He had been expected to run in the Jim Dandy, but a bacterial lung infection caused him to miss around 10 days of training, so his team instead decided to train him straight into the Travers.
The signs since then have been good, and he completed his final four-furlong breeze in 49.66 seconds at Saratoga on August 22nd.
He may arrive fresh and ready. Renegade, though, has the advantage of already having a successful Travers prep.
The Other Travers Contenders
Despite all the hype about these two formidable horses going head-to-head once again, this is far from being a two-horse race.
Sea Strike is the obvious third choice after winning the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga by 8 1/4 lengths. He is lightly raced and improving, although the extra distance has to be proved.
Napoleon Solo brings a Preakness win into the race, while Baby Vino beat him in the Haskell. The Puma, Silent Tactic, Leading Change, Emerging Market and Ocelli complete a field with plenty of depth.
The early pace could be important, but Renegade and Golden Tempo both do their best work late, so a strongly run race would suit them. Whether either of them can win it remains to be seen.
Can Renegade Win the 2026 Travers Stakes?
In short – yes, he can. He has all the attributes needed to come good on Saturday, but it won't be easy.
Golden Tempo remains the horse to beat, particularly after his Belmont success at Saratoga. But Renegade was only a neck behind him in the Kentucky Derby, has since won the Jim Dandy and comes into the Travers with race fitness on his side.
The key may be how close Gaffalione can keep him to Golden Tempo before the final turn. Give the favourite first run and Renegade could have too much ground to make up. Stay within striking distance, and we could get exactly the late battle the betting suggests.
At 3-1, Renegade is the clear main danger to Golden Tempo, and based on what he has done this year, that looks entirely fair.
