One of the biggest events of the British Flat season is just around the corner, as preparations for the July Festival at Newmarket ramp up. And while local trainers might be confident of victory, a few from neighbouring Ireland will be looking to gatecrash the party.
The festival, set to run from Thursday 9th to Saturday 11th July, will feature runners who have earned their stripes under Irish trainers.
Will Aidan O’Brien add to his impressive record at the headquarters of British racing? Can Dermot Weld or others cause an upset? All that is set to be answered in due course.
People across the counties will be keeping tabs on Newmarket, making the most of promotions such as a William Hill sign up offer for Ireland in order to back the Irish contingent in Suffolk. But who are their best hopes of victory in the three feature races at Newmarket?
Purview – Princess of Wales’s Stakes
Thursday 9th July marks Ladies Day at Newmarket, as hundreds flock to the course in stylish outfits. While some eyes will be on winning the best-dressed prize, others will be squarely on the feature race of the day, the Princess of Wales’s Stakes.
The one-mile, four-furlong race will test runners over a middle distance, as they travel down the dip before the climb over the Bunbury Mile.
And while odds have not been confirmed at the time of writing, Irish trainer Dermot Weld will be hoping that Purview can continue his fine form.
After wins in three consecutive races, including a double at the Curragh in 2026, confidence in the Purview camp is sky-high heading into Newmarket.
One of those races was over the same distance as the Princess of Wales’s Stakes, and jockey Colin Keane will hope that it can lead to more success in July.
Precise – Falmouth Stakes
It seems as though an Irish trainer is a near-certainty to win the Falmouth Stakes on the second day of the July Festival, with 12 entries all being trained by some of the nation’s best.
Aidan O'Brien has a number of runners in contention for the one-mile race, including Precise, the current favourite.
The three-year-old has won two of her three runs in 2026, most recently at Ascot in the Coronation Stakes, and is 15/8 favourite to secure a third consecutive victory. Having fallen short in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May, she will hope to bounce back this summer.
However, another of O’Brien’s horses is in even better form, as Diamond Necklace enters the Stakes with an undefeated record. At 8/1, the filly is a tempting option.
Moreover, the Willie McCreery-trained Jancis is also set to contend and will be hoping for a second win at Newmarket this year, having previously won the Dahlia Stakes.
Whether that will translate from the Rowley Mile to the July Course remains to be seen, and bookmakers don’t seem to fancy the mare’s chances of victory, pricing her at 25/1.
Mission Central – July Cup
The July Cup brings the curtain down on Newmarket’s summer festival, and it seems as though Aidan O’Brien will once again be carrying Ireland’s hopes of victory in the showpiece.
With five wins in the race with five different horses, one more will make him the leading trainer in the race’s illustrious history.
In 2026, it’s Mission Central who will be his best hope of victory. At 8/1, he is behind favourite Venetian Sun and leading contenders Almeraq and Satono Reve, but he is coming into Newmarket in good form.
Three wins from three runs, including a narrow victory in the King Charles III Stakes at Ascot, make him an enticing pick.
But while O’Brien has history at Newmarket, he is without a win in the July Cup since 2019, when Ten Sovereigns won by two-and-three-quarter lengths.
The veteran trainer will be desperate to end that drought, but whether Mission Central can maintain the pace shown at Ascot over the extra furlong at Newmarket remains to be seen.
