Harry Redknapp’s star won a dramatic King George at Kempton, showing he can mix it with high‑class rivals and pull out plenty when it matters.
He jumps, travels, stays three miles strongly and gives the impression that the extra distance around Cheltenham could draw out even more, especially if he can get into a good rhythm near the pace.
The chief threat may well be Haiti Couleurs, who has put together one of the most eye‑catching staying profiles in the field.
Wins in both the National Hunt at Cheltenham last year, and both of the Irish and Welsh Grand Nationals have confirmed his stamina in no uncertain terms.
He topped it off with a smooth Denman Chase success at Newbury last time out, showing he is not just a slogger – he has real class.
For each‑way players, Spillane’s Tower stands out as a very workable outsider. His Cotswold Chase victory over this course and distance on Trials Day was the perfect Gold Cup audition, proving he handles the New Course, the trip and a strong pace.
He may lack the headline appeal of the market leaders, but he has the look of a horse who can get into a nice position and keep on for a place even if one or two prove a bit too good.
Others With Place Prospects
That is not to dismiss the rest of the field, because this is a renewal where several at double‑figure prices could feasibly sneak into the frame.
Grey Dawning, for example, has long carried a “Gold Cup type” label and still brings a strong body of staying chase form despite a slightly underwhelming Cotswold run behind Spillane’s Tower.
